Seeing the Figueiras Horses through the lens

Rui Pedro Godinho has spent more than two decades working behind the scenes of international equestrian sport. As a photographer, videographer and media specialist, he has documented countless competitions and riders across Europe.

For many years he has been closely connected to the Lusitano world. Through his work he has followed riders, breeders and horses at some of the most important competitions and events. “I started working with Lusitano horses in 2004,” Rui Pedro explains. “Since then I have been present at many shows, creating photos, videos and media content for riders and events.”

Through this work he has also followed the development of the Figueiras horses over the years. “In the beginning they were very successful in driving competitions,” he recalls. “Later they started investing more and more in dressage, and that is when we began to see them more often in the sport arenas.”

Among the many moments he witnessed, one stands out as particularly emotional. “One of the most special memories I have is seeing Batuta in Aachen,” Rui Pedro says. “I was photographing the freestyle that I also wrote for this mare, and the stadium was completely full.” The performance left a deep impression on him. “I remember standing there taking photos, looking at my own freestyle, with tears running down my face,” he recalls. “The atmosphere was incredible and Batuta looked like a warrior horse coming straight out of a movie.”

For Rui Pedro, the power and presence of the horses are unmistakable. “They have this incredible energy and knee action,” he explains. “When they move forward you immediately see their strength.” Having followed the horses for many years, he believes the future of the Figueiras horses looks very promising.

“The new generation of horses looks very good,” he says. “Now that they are increasingly competing in dressage, we will see how far they can go.” He also highlights the character that makes Lusitano horses so special. “They have heart and willingness,” Rui Pedro concludes. “They want to work with the rider and help you. That is something very characteristic of these horses.”
